The humble sandwich shop located in Sydney’s east suburbs won the award for Australia’s Best Singer.
After a public vote, South Dowling Sandwiches, located in Darlinghurst in the inner-city suburb, won the “Best Sanga Award” at the “Uniquely Aussie Awards.”
Avi Labi took over the shop 14 years ago and transformed it into a cult lunch destination.
According to Mr Labi, the most popular sandwich in his shop is “The Biatch,” which he affectionately called after his daughter.
“It’s spicy, like my daughter,” he told Channel 7.
“But it’s delicious, so tasty, one of my favorite sandwiches.”
The $15 sandwich is stuffed with bocconcini, South Dowling Sandwiches, caramelized carrots, lettuce, rocket, and pickles. It also includes red cabbage, red pesto mayo, pickles, red radish, lettuce, rocket and herb mayo.
Many people have tried to copy the style, but they are not even close. “People love it,” Mr Labi continued.
South Dowling Sandwiches has also opened locations in Alexandria and Millers Point. Mr. Labi described winning the title as an “honor.”
He said, “Our team… puts so much care into our food. Our customers are returning customers every day and we are grateful that they voted us.”
